Raw Edges: Landscape Full of Meanders, Valleys, Mountains, and Plateaus
(jiří macek) One of the most interesting contemporary designers (and our favourites), Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer, a.k.a. Raw Edges, whom visitors had an opportunity to see at Designblok two years ago, transform reality by means of ordinary miracles. In their case, everything seems to have started as a game. For instance, take a belt and start bending it.
In the Coiling Collection, a simple felt belt, an endless strip that one can randomly terminate, becomes a carpet, an armchair, or a table. Individual objects are created like contour lines in a landscape, like valleys cut into river meanders. The strip and its gradual coils provide the basic structure; the silicone layer consolidates it and gives the wood its final form. However, the wood itself looks as if it was folded, as if it was an intersection of lines/lathes depicted in time. It is fascinating to watch one project being derived from another one, as if one single detail of one project gave birth to future objects. The paper trees, designed for Rosana Orlandi a year ago, restlessly interweaving into one another, seem to mirror the strip contour lines. This is a world pervaded with miracles – like a landscape with valleys, mountains, and plateaus. It is really beautiful.
