Marcel Wanders: The Autumn Wood and Crystal Deer

(jiří macek) Marcel Wanders materialized a dream that he had a long time ago in the collection entitled United Crystal Woods, made for Baccarat. It was a dream about a crystal wood with mythical deer and pure power.

He explained that, after a long night, he had woken up with his head on the table with many empty glasses around him and decided to welcome the new day in an autumn wood. “It was an astounding wood of empty crystal trees that showed their bare skeletons; a wood which surrounded me and dominated over me; a wood complemented with endlessly glistening crystal,” recalls Wanders. Light shimmering in colors and whispers draws the traces of transparent water through the details of his story. Wanders calls this wood a wood of permanent change, a wood where scents, colors, and arrangements shift every second. Everything one saw during one day was a thing of the past the following day. The dream had been long forgotten before Wanders ran across an amazing crystal from one of the most luxury glass brands in the world – the French brand of Baccarat. He created a mirror from glasses, bottles, vases, and candlesticks through which one can enter the forgotten wood. However, one can enter it only when light, scents, and his/her empathy find ardent sun in the cool crystal, when one longs for the chilliness of white birch trees. This fairytale – and Marcel Wanders is a master of fairytales – has a hero, of course - a tiny clown. You can never be sure whether he is guiding you into the realm behind the mirror or whether he is silently laughing at your folly. The portrait of Marcel Wanders is, naturally, a part of the collection. Without him, the wood would never be the wood for which we all long for from time to time. Deer with burning candles in their antlers know which path to take in the dark – one has to take the filigreed curves bent backward.
