(jiří macek) Half a year ago, UP závody presented its first collection that became a hit during Designblok in Prague. As a result, UP závody won the Czech Grand Design Award for Manufacturer of the Year in 2007. In Milan, however, we will have the opportunity to take a look at some brand new pieces. We are the first ones to present them to you.
Zbyněk Hřivnáč, Vladimír Žák, Maxim Velčovský, and an anonymous designer are the authors of the new collections. In fact, these are not brand new pieces, but re-editions of evergreens from the 1970s that created stylish backgrounds in many Czech films and households. At that time, the Hockeyka sofa and chair-armchair were produced by UP závody, but the factory bore a different name. Maxim Velčovský had been thinking about them for a long time. Now they are being produced again. The sofa in particular is ingenious. As for its shape, this sofa bed is very simple. It is a graphic tag of households from the 70s.
Armchairs by Zbyněk Hřivnáč are jewels in the interior design of the iconic Hotel Praha built at the beginning of the 1980s. Unfortunately, there are not many of them left in the hotel today. The Hotel Praha armchair is the result of converting unique pieces into lot manufacturing. The designer himself participated in this procedure.
The Kubikula armchair seems to be reminiscent of the cubist past. However, its shape is absolutely contemporary. It was designed by Vladimír Žák, a student at the AAAD in Prague. In case his name rings the bell (or in case you have never heard it), have a look at the designer collections of Moravské sklárny Květná.
The collection includes two pieces by the Czech Grand Design Designer of the Year for 2007 and UP brand art director - Maxim Velčovský: the Beskyd wooden chair and the Mozaic armchair, a follow-up to the sofa bearing the same name that has been presented before.
A gorgeous collection, don’t you think? The British Established and Son should start worrying, as should many others. UP závody, the manufacturer from Třebíč, is here.
