Matali Crasset: Xtra Space

(jiří macek) In the premiere collection of the French brand Moustache, one can find, apart from a great collection of furniture pieces, one interior element that no one should overlook. Matali Crasset created the Xtra room mobile system from simple elements that enable the user to bring intimacy into non-intimate spaces and constantly change the layout of one’s apartment or office.

We have already written about one of the most interesting premieres of this year – the foundation of the French brand Moustache, whose powerful collection also includes designs by Francois Azambourg, Big Game, Inge Sempé, Anna Mir, and Emili Padros. However, we would like to pay closer attention to Matali Crasset’s Xtra room project because it defies all the standard categories of furniture manufacturers. This is neither a sofa, nor a chair, nor a light or a wardrobe – it is Xtra portable space.

Matali Crasset, who often plays with space in a very unconventional manner and interprets it as a landscape, enriching it with objects of unspecified purposes, designed a simple system suitable for lot production. This system enables us to create a new room when we need it without building impenetrable walls – a room for unexpected guests, a work corner in a large living room, or a quiet space in a noisy office. One is able to build the entire structure of the space from individual modules and endow it with new dimensions. Moreover, Xtra functions as an object, as a sculpture that can represent a very distinctive feature of any interior design. This is true no matter if it looks like a carpet stand including the carpet or a brocade blanket. It simply is a piece of life embodied in a new element that turns a screen into an event. One may even consider using it as a garden or a meadow pavilion.
