Werner Aisslinger: Net furniture

(jiří macek) The Berlin-base German designer, Werner Aisslinger, has probably designed the most beautiful chairs this year, in spite of all buts his tender chairs evoke. The super-light crocheted NETfurniture collection has not been in production yet and will not be for a long time. Nevertheless, it brings more joy to the development of design and too our personal impressions than any other chair designed this year.

Even though it may seem impossible with regard to the list of prominent companies for which Werner Aisslinger has made designs, he has always been an eager experimenter. Those who remember his first exhibition in Prague in the first historic Superstudio at Designblok’03 will find his current experiments with production technologies and materials very logical and clear. Initially, although he was interested primarily in plastic, gels, and their easy integration into complex structures, he currently tends to stray into the field of classical materials, such as glass, wood, or steel. However, when employing them, he plays with their maximum limits of use. This designer of the ever-inspiring Loftcube mobile cabin, which can be placed on any flat city roof, simply has to explore the possibilities of modern materials and technologies in which one transfers the uniqueness of craftsmanship and individuality into lot-production.

The NETwork furniture collection, presented in Milan and at the DMY in Berlin, definitely ranks among the most powerful concepts that explore the current possibilities of furniture development that have been designed this year. Even though the lovely collection of 3D embroidered chairs and tables is only a designer concept for the time being, one may soon hover in fluffy ornaments as naturally and automatically as one can lounge in the legendary gel Soft chaise designed for Zanotta in 1999.
