Lucie Koldová: Incognito Igloo

(jiří macek) “I think it is very important for children to have their own shelter with a hiding place,” says Lucie Koldová. Her Igloo, designed for Process, is more than a shelter – it is a bookcase.

Similar to ice cubes, books provide magnificent heat insulation. However, this Igloo is interesting because it provides a hiding place where one can read without being disturbed. That is, in case your child is a bookworm. But is the Igloo for children only? Yes, it is. We asked Koldová why she decided to design something for children…

Are you going to have a baby?

Lucie Koldová: Many children have been born this year. This theme is simply in the air. Many of my friends are going to get married this year or have children. Together with the Process company and other designers, we agreed on this theme. And me? I am definitely not going to have a child now, but hope to have some in future.

Did you use to build bunkers as a child?

LK: Of course I did. A bunker meant privacy where no one else was allowed. I think it is very important for children to have their own shelter with a hiding place. I used to creep under a table that I had carefully covered with a blanket. I looked out of my bunker through a burnt hole in the blanket. It was exciting not to be seen and to know that nobody had a clue what I was up to in my bunker. In one word - Incognito.

Well, I thought you had spent most of your time at stadiums. They say you are still an excellent athlete. What is your longest jump?

LK: My personal record is 6 meters, which I achieved at Dukla during the Czech extra league of teams; but I was primarily a triple jumper. Until I was 22, I went to international competitions. I also won medals at the Czech championships; but these do not count much. It was a lot about restraining myself; there were competitions every week, big nerves, and absolute concentration… it really absorbs you. One must enjoy it to the fullest. You cannot combine this with art. Even though I loved athletics, I decided on design. I just practise sports in my free time. I go jogging after dark.

Lucky for us, Lucie Koldová decided on design. The Igloo is one of the new pieces that will have its premiere during this year’s Designblok.
