(jiří macek) The family of mad dancers, walking houses, and lunar centipedes designed by the Brazilian designer Chico Bicalho has been enlarged with a new piece. It is called Mxykikker and has great antennae.
Mxykikker belongs to the Critters family of mechanical toys designed by Chico for the Dutch brand Kikkerland. Chico lives in Rio de Janeiro, where he is more of an artist than a designer. Moreover, he is a football player as well.
Chico has designed over twenty mechanical toys for Kikkerland. These toys are reminiscent of the insect world of centipedes and water-skaters. The Critters are able to perform a wide variety of bizarre movements ranging from headlong rushes to elegant rolling. Their legs beat and buzz in an unmistakable way. Have a look at them on YouTube, where you will see that these items are not just mere toys. The Critters are the Onyx brothers.
The Mxykikker centipede and its predecessors fit perfectly into the Kikkerland world, where one can find a realm of useless things in such a form that they are made useful. Apart from toys, there are also alarm clocks, bottle-openers, flash-cards, holders, photo frames, calculators, book holders, globes, pens, scissors, pencil sharpeners, umbrellas, grinders, flower pots, coat racks, and a Ludo board game – hundreds of minute, practical objects without which our lives would be very different.
The Kikkerland brand was founded in 1992. It has cooperated with many prominent designers whom its representatives seek out all over the world. Our favorite, Richard Hutten, who gave very big ears to a mug, is one of them.
