(adam štěch] One of the biggest annual events of fans of bicycle design starts today, on February 26. The North American Handmade Bicycle Show, a.k.a. NAHBS, opens at the gates of Greater Richmond Convention Centre in Richmond, Virginia where bicycle manufacture and design will be presented as a sacrosanct craft.
The small independent workshops that manufacture bicycles rank among the biggest phenomena in this field in the USA. The annual exhibition, which presents dozens of manufacturers, represents a fascinating excursion into the mysteries of biking, not only from North-American designers, but also Italian and Japanese workshops. The exhibition, with the famous Japanese brand of Shimano as its main partner, will present such brands as Richard Sachs, Mosaic, Moots, Bilenky, Eriksen Cycles, Independent Fabrication, Pegoretti, and the legendary Chris King, i.e. the icon of biking, who manufactures distinctive headsets. Even though one could hardly distinguish some hand-made bikes from the bikes made in lot-production by big brands (Trek, Specialized, Gary Fisher, etc.) at first sight, the details will always reveal the precise workmanship on the frame and a sophisticated selection of components that turn each specimen into an inimitable unique piece with which the manufacturer has spent many hours of careful work. Individual brands often limit their production on specific bicycle types. However, they sometimes offer mountain, road, city and track bikes with fixed pedals. One will definitely find out at NAHBS that there is nothing better than a hand-made bike.
