Sabrina Oliveira: Potatoes, Ham, and an Easter Stick

(jiří macek) If you are planning a truly stylish picnic, you must meet 23-year-old French Sabrina Oliviera. The designer, who was on a fellowship in the AAAD studio led by Liběna Rochová, has designed bags inspired by traditional Czech meals – that is why they are so substantial - I mean capacious.

She was bred on French cuisine, and thus, was allegedly taken by surprise by the substantiality and size of Czech meals. She transformed their exaggeration into the form of her bags, which reflect the amount of pork and potatoes she had to consume during her stay in Prague. Even though we Czechs cannot find this overly flattering, do not expect super-size string bags. Her bags are not only very big, but also beautiful and practical. They can hold so many things.
Apart from our gluttony, Oliviera managed to explore another Czech tradition that she found flabbergasting - the Easter stick – which she transformed into a specific design. Her jewelry collection is inspired by the process of weaving an Easter stick. One can use the jewelry pieces as decoration or to observe in them a thin line that leads to one’s door. “My conclusion is that we are all in a cage, in a whirl, a block. We no longer notice our traditions because they have become established and imperceptible. Our traditions don’t have an ending; they are too fixed within our customs,” explains Oliviera. Her jewelry pieces turn us into a pebble or a basket full of thoughts. They are very beautiful.
