Raw Edges: Carved Boats

(jiří macek) We often write about the British duo of Israeli designers, Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay. So far we have focused only on their auctorial projects. However, their premiere in the field of products made in lot-productions deserves mentioning. The renowned Italian brand of Cappellini presented the first results of their collaboration at Design Week in Milan.

The traces of this collection, which consists of a chair, a stool and a bench, can be found in the designers’ auctorial prototypes. I first saw the wooden bench in the form of a boat in the British exposition at Design Tide Tokyo two years ago and was sure I would never forget it, probably because I loved to float on bark boats in brooks as a child. However, Cappellini presents the bench in a redesigned version, complemented with completely new elements. The bench is interesting because of its shape and the illusion it evokes. The TWB (Tailored Wood Bench) collection is puzzling. Although it looks as if it was made from crumpled paper, it is actually made from non-crumpled material. Good joke. It is made from solid ash wood, but with a finish that supports the illusion of paper, giving it lightness, which is very important for every sailor. Raw Edges excel at lightness. Do you remember the Pleased collection that they presented at Designblok last year?

Cappellini products can be purchased in the Czech Republic at Konsepti.
